Play is the most important way that a child learns and develops. It allows for exploration, imagination and decision-making skills as well as being enjoyable for individuals. Children are naturally drawn to play. Play is important to healthy brain development.
How does play support learning and development?
Physical development – participating in active play assists in developing muscles and overall developing physical growth. Physical development allows for the development of skills important for self-help such as dressing and feeding.
Social and Emotional Development – engagement in role pay and dressing up can develop positive social and emotional skills and values. This allows children to practice making choices and decisions, emotional control and develop empathy and self-confidence.
Cognitive Development – problem solving, imagination, creativity and concepts such as shapes and colours are developed through play.
